Weve talked previously about changing the Normal or base font of your brief to meet a courts briefing requirements. Changing the font typeface and size there, rather than selecting all the text and changing it using the font drop-downs on the Home tab, allows that change to cascade down to other elements like headers and footers. But what if your Court has additional font requirements? Colorado, for example, requires that the footnotes be the same size as the regular brief text. In Microsoft Word, while the Footnote Text Styles will adopt the typeface setting of the Normal Style, its usually sized by default 2 points smaller than the Normal Style. How d

When in Draft mode, you need to click on Show Notes in the Footnotes section of the References tab of the ribbon and then select the Footnote Separator from the dropdown at the top of the footnotes pane and format the paragraph to remove the space before it.
Remove or change a footnote or endnote separator The Footnotes pane appears at the bottom of your document. You can edit the color or style of the separator by choosing options on the Home tab, or, to delete the separators, click Footnote Separator in the Footnotes list, and then select and delete the separator line.
Footnotes and endnotes are set smaller than body text. The difference in size is usually about two points, but this can vary depending on the size, style and legibility of the main text. Even though theyre smaller, footnotes and endnotes should still remain at a readable size.
Each footnote should appear at the bottom of the page that includes its numbered in-text reference. For note numbers in the text, use superscript. Indent the first line of each note half an inch like a paragraph in the main text. Use a short line (or rule) to separate footnotes from the main text.
If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on). For even more formatting options, click the Format button in the lower-left corner.
You may use the default text size for your notes. The preferred method is to use the same font and font size as your text (12 pt font Times New Roman) Footnotes should be placed at the end of all punctuation except the dash.
Use the Footnotes pull-down menu and select Footnotes Separator. Then Right Click on the bar and choose Paragraph from the contextual menu that displays. Check/adjust the Spacing Before and After settings for the Footnote Separator in this dialog where I have highlighted.
If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on). For even more formatting options, click the Format button in the lower-left corner.
To keep the footnote together in Word: Press Ctrl+Shift+S to Apply Styles. Footnote Text. Click Modify. Click Format. Select Paragraph. Under Line and Page Breaks tab. Check box by Keep lines together. Click OK.
Thats due to the formatting of your Footnote Reference style. Use FormatStyle to change it.
