Stopping Antibiotics Too Early Can Cause Problems If your pet misses a dose, its fine to give him or her the medication as soon as you realize its needed, as long as its only been a few hours since the antibiotic should have been taken. If its almost time for the next pill, dont give your pet the missed dose.
Each drug has a different duration in the bloodstream after administration, so its important that a drug labeled for three times a day is given as close to every 8 hours as possible. Missed doses should not be doubled up with the next dose unless instructed to do so by the veterinarian.
Tips Create a list of all medications you are taking. The list should include the name of the medication, the dose, and the number of times a day you have to take it. Include information about how to take the medication (with or without food, as a pill, as a shot). Include information about any allergies.
When the medicine label on the medicine says to take three times day it generally means take every 8 hours. For example we divide 8 hours into 24 hours which gives us 3. Therefore four times a day would be every 6 hours, (24 divided by 6 = 4).

Never use systemic antibiotics for fewer than 3 days in a row. Systemic antibiotics are all those given orally or by injection. (Topicals, such as ointments and powders, are not always used ing to this rule.)
Try to space the doses evenly throughout the day. If you take phenoxymethylpenicillin 4 times a day, this could be first thing in the morning, around midday, late afternoon and at bedtime. If youre taking it twice a day, leave 12 hours between each dose.
Ideally, try to give medications at roughly the same time every day. Four times daily medication: doses should ideally be given 6 hours apart.
If given once a day, give this medication in the morning, with breakfast. That way it works throughout the day while your dog is active, and any wearing off happens overnight, while hes sleeping. It wont make him sleepy, so in my experience, giving in the morning is ideal.
QID means a dose should be taken four times daily, while Q6H means that dose should be taken every six hours. These abbreviations are usually written on the prescription from your healthcare provider so that the pharmacy can dispense your medication with the proper instructions.
