To change the formatting of the footnote numbers, select the Footnotes Reference Style. If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on).

A document can contain footnotes, which appear at the bottom of the page, or endnotes, which appear at the end of the document or a section.Convert notes from one type to another Click any note in your document. In the Format sidebar, click the Footnotes tab. Click the Type pop-up menu and choose a note type.
You can change the font style, font size, color, and other properties of the footnote numbers and text. Change the properties of all your footnotes at once by making changes to the default styles. To change the properties of the footnote numbers: Choose Format Styles and Formatting.
Insert your first (primary) footnote as normal. Position the insertion point in the document where you want the secondary reference to the footnote. Choose Cross-reference from the Insert menu. Word displays the Cross-reference dialog box.
