In Microsoft Word, you technically cannot remove footers as they are always a part of the document. Even if they are empty, they still exist unless completely resized to zero. To adjust the distance of headers and footers from the edges of the page, go to File > Page Setup > Layout tab. To remove footers or headers, delete what is inside them by going to View > Header and Footer.
