User-defined icons are stored in the AppData folder, while system-defined icons are stored in the Windows system folder. You can access the icons in these folders using File Explorer or a third-party icon editor. Additionally, some applications allow you to access the icons stored in Windows.
Method 1: Use Finder Click the Finder icon in your dock to open Finder. Navigate to the folder where you want to find hidden files. Press Command + Shift + . (the period key). This will show hidden files in the folder. To hide the files again, press Command + Shift + . again.
Any file name that starts with the tilde character ~$ is a temporary file for the file name that follows. These are not your documents, workbooks, or presentation files.
On your Mac, select the file or folder. Choose File Get Info in the menu bar. At the top of the Info window, select the small custom icon. Make sure you click the small icon at the top of the Info window (not the large icon under Preview).
In the Finder toolbar, click a View button (the buttons may be in a pop-up menu; to show them in a row, make the window wider). Try each view to see which one works best. Icon view : Items are shown as icons arranged in a grid. To change the icon size, choose View Show View Options, then drag the Icon size slider.
Find and open apps in Launchpad Find an app: Type its name in the search field at the top of Launchpad. Or look on another page in Launchpadswipe left or right on the trackpad or press Command-Left Arrow or Command-Right Arrow.
For example, when you open a Word document called Document1. doc, a file called ~$cument1. doc is created in the same directory. This file contains information about which user has the file open, to prevent multiple users from attempting to change a document at the same time.
Browsing system icons If youre the curious type, you might want to take a peek at Mac OS Xs system icons. The system icons bundle, found in the /System/Library/CoreServices directory, stores about 140 icons.
