Add a footnote Click where you want to add the footnote. Click Insert Insert Footnote. Word inserts a reference mark in the text and adds the footnote mark at the bottom of the page.
If you delete the original footnote reference, you will also delete the footnote, so dont do that. If your footnote numbers are out of sequence, chances are one or more of the references is not actually a footnote.
Footnotes are listed at the bottom of the page on which a citation is made. A numeral is placed in the text to indicate the cited work and again at the bottom of the page in front of the footnote. A footnote lists the author, title and details of publication, in that order.
How to do footnotes Check if the reader requires footnotes or endnotes. Identify the pieces of information you want to cite. Insert a superscript number into the text. Create consecutively numbered footnote entries at the bottom of the page. Add the information you want to include in the footnote.
When using the footnote function in a word-processing program like Microsoft Word, place all footnotes at the bottom of the page on which they appear. Footnotes may also appear on the final page of your document (usually this is after the References page). Center the word Footnotes at the top of the page.
On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Location, click Footnotes or Endnotes, and then on the Footnotes or Endnotes pop-up menu, click the location that you want.
Questions and answers From the References tab, Footnotes group, click on the dialog box launcher button. The footnote and Endnote dialog box will be displayey. Change the Footnotes settings under Location. Click on Apply.
In the Footnote and Endnote dialog box, click on the radio button next to the Endnotes option under Location. From the dropdown menu next to the Endnotes option, you can either choose End of section or End of document.
Each footnote should appear at the bottom of the page that includes its numbered in-text reference. For note numbers in the text, use superscript. Indent the first line of each note half an inch like a paragraph in the main text. Use a short line (or rule) to separate footnotes from the main text.
Footnotes should be numbered consecutively in the order they appear throughout your paper. Each note should have a unique number; dont use the same number again even if you cite the same source repeatedly.
