Remember phone books? I remember phone books. Youd have a name and then youd look that person up and copy down their phone number and then you dial their number into a phone the size of your face. Imagine if e-mail was like that. Youd have someones email address, which is like their name, but then youd still have to look up their domains mail server, which is like their phone number. Finally, youd have to copy everything down and send an email to, well, you get the point. But e-mails not like that. When you send a message, you can just type in any e-mail address and click send, without having to add any weird looking mail servers. So, how does Gmail or any other e-mail service just auto-magically know which mail server to deliver your mail to? The answer iis-- wait for it. [EXPLOSION] An MX record. Your domains MX records consist of a list of mail servers that tell email servers like Gmail where to deliver your incoming mail. Thats pretty much it. Its just like being listed

A DNS mail exchange (MX) record directs email to a mail server. The MX record indicates how email messages should be routed in ance with the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP, the standard protocol for all email). Like CNAME records, an MX record must always point to another domain.
An A record maps a domain to the physical IP address of the computer hosting that domain. Internet traffic uses the A record to find the computer hosting your domains DNS settings. The value of an A record is always an IP address, and multiple A records can be configured for one domain name.
Enter the details for your TXT record: Name: The host name for the record. Type @ to put the TXT record on your root domain, or enter a prefix such as mail. Value: The text string for the TXT record. This is usually provided by your SSL, hosting or email provider. TTL: How long the server should cache information.
The reverse DNS record (rDNS) is also known as the PTR record, pointer record, or IP resolver. A PTR is a reverse record for an IP address that allows an IP to map to a domain and vice versa. That means you can make hostgator.com point to 10.0. 0.1 and make a PTR record so that 10.0.
DNS stands for Domain Name System. A DNS translates or resolves a hostname (eg. .zoho.com) into a language of numbers that a computer can understand (eg. an IP address).
PTR records (or Pointer records) are used for the Reverse DNS (Domain Name System) lookup. Using the IP address you can get the associated domain/hostname. An A record should exist for every PTR record. The usage of a reverse DNS setup for a mail server is a good solution.
Emails are routed through to the IP address which is set in the A-record of the host. The A-record (or address-record) determines which IP address belongs to a domain name. This record translates the domain name to an IP address.
While emails run on mail servers, DNS is still very much a part of how messages are delivered. Just like when you enter a website into a browser, each email sent generates a query and must resolve to an IP address. DNS records are what tell mail servers where to deliver messages.
PTR record creates a pointer that maps a hostname to an IP address for reverse lookups. The functionality provided by a PTR record allows multiple domain names to resolve to the same IP address. PTR record resolves an IP address to a hostname for reverse lookups.
This record is used to indicate to mail exchanges which hosts are authorized to send mail for a domain. TXT records should be used instead of the special SPF record type. This record proves ownership of a domain and can be used to associate services such as Microsoft 365 and G-Suite to a specific domain.
