Usually, a bullet point is represented by a centered dot (), but there are different forms of bullets to pick from based on the writers preference. For example, a diamond (), diamond cluster (❖), an arrow (➢), and square (■) are other popular bullet point types that can be used.
A bullet point is a symbol that is used in writing to introduce an item in a list. A commonly used symbol to represent a bullet point is a centered dot ( ), but many different symbols and characters can be used in bullet point lists. Sometimes, bulleted lists even use numbers and/or letters.
As with any formatting technique, overusing bullet points will detract from the overall goal in writing and formatting a business document. Bullet points should highlight important information only. Use them wisely to emphasize key information within the text.
There are many forms of bullets to choose from. The most common forms are the heavy black dot ( ● ) and the open circle ( ○ ). Other common bullet choices include squares (filled and open), diamonds, dashes and checkmarks.
A colon should be used to introduce the list, and the first letter of each point should be capitalised. For example: Departments in the Faculty of Natural Sciences. Department of Chemistry.
Most importantly, a list must be introduced by a lead-in sentence (or clause) that contains both a subject and a verb. Technical writers often use the expression the following somewhere in the lead-in sentence to clearly indicate that a list of items will follow.

The text that is used to introduce a section of bullet points should end in a colon. When the information provided in bullet points is a complete sentence, it should begin with a capital letter and end with proper punctuation. Bullet points do not necessarily have to be complete sentences.
How to use bullet points Make sure all items in the list are related to each other. Use the same font and margin width in each bulleted point. Keep bullet points short, preferably no more than three lines long. Begin all items with the same part of speech (active verbs work well) and make sure they are in parallel form.
The Keyboard Shortcut for Typing a Dot Symbol To type the dot symbol on your keyboard, turn on the numeric keypad by pressing NumLk , hold Alt and press the 0 , 1 , 4 , and 9 keys in succession. If you dont type the numbers with the numeric keypad, the dot symbol will not show.
