If you are using your business name as your trademark, you can also register your business name as a trademark. Registering your trademark will give you exclusive rights to it in Canada for at least 15 years (you can renew it indefinitely as long as it is still being used).
The fee to submit online is $30 and a $1.50 service fee. BY SERVICE BC CENTRE: Visit any Service BC Centre who will transmit the request to the Registrar. For locations go to .servicebc.gov.bc.ca.
Fortunately, there are steps you can take now that will help ensure that your good name will stay that way. Protecting your name in your home state. Filing a DBA or registering a business name. Trademark a business name. Copyrighting a business name. Internet names.
Having a corporations name listed on the Register could prevent other BC companies from using a similar or same name. Being incorporated in BC could also prevent a similar or same name being used for a federal (Canada) incorporation.
If you are using your business name as your trademark, you can also register your business name as a trademark. Registering your trademark will give you exclusive rights to it in Canada for at least 15 years (you can renew it indefinitely as long as it is still being used).
Request a name Submit your name request online or complete the Name Request form (PDF, 117KB) and mail it or drop it off at a Service BC location ($30 fee). Include payment when submitting your request by mail. Make payment payable to the Minister of Finance.
Apply for a business name You can submit a name request application in several places: Online: using BC Registry Services Name Request. In person: at OneStop service counters or Service BC. By mail: Download the Name Approval Request form from OneStop.
If you have a logo or symbol that is part of the business name, you can include pictures of the logo or symbol as part of the application. This ensures that the entire trademark name and surrounding images is registered. Registering with the USPTO is not required.
Apply to incorporate a society online ($100 fee). Youll need: Your name request reservation number. The societys purpose (part of its constitution), including indicating if the society is member-funded.
If your business has employees, facilities, or offices in Ontario, you must register using the Ontario Business Registry. You will need a working email address for online registration and a valid debit or credit card for payment. The registration fee depends on the type of business you are registering.
