The nautical chart is essential for safe navigation. Mariners use charts to plan voyages and navigate ships safely and economically. Federal regulations require most commercial vessels to carry electronic or paper nautical charts while they transit U.S. waters.
The Canada Shipping Act requires most vessels to carry paper charts specifically, even if navigation will be done by GPS or on a computer. If youre are going to be navigating, you should be carrying charts.
If you must remove trees on private property, you need to comply with the Private Tree Protection By-law. You need a permit to remove trees on your private property if youre removing one or more trees 15 cm (6 inches) or greater in diameter, including dead or dying trees.
A permit is required to remove or injure any tree on private property which is over 30cm diameter measured from 1.4 metres above ground level. City Fee for Removal permit application: $132.21 PER TREE (no maximum) $275.99 PER TREE if the tree to be removed is a boundary or shared neighbour tree.
Paper charts have benefits over a GPS: they dont require power, laminated versions are waterproof, you can easily mark and comment on them, and most importantly they make it easier to see and review a large area compared to looking at it on a screen.
UKHOs statement added that the phasing out of paper charts will take place over a number of years, with an anticipated conclusion in 2026. They write that the ADMIRALTY Maritime Data Solutions digital navigation portfolio can be updated in near real-time, greatly enhancing safety of life at sea (SOLAS).
Nautical publications required by law Vessels under 100 gross tonnage are exempt from this requirement, as long as the operator is familiar enough with the area and its shipping routes, hazards and navigational conditions that no ones safety will be compromised.
The city of Toronto has a Private Tree By-law in place to ensure that mature healthy trees are not carelessly removed or negatively impacted by private development. Any tree with a trunk that measures over 30cm in diameter, at 1.4m above grade is subject to protection in the by-law.
