Lower resolution images appear fuzzy, jagged and blurry. Resolution rules: Images should be 300 dpi (dots per inch) at the final size in the layout. Images which include text should be 400 dpi at the final size in the layout.
For an image to print properly, the image should be saved at 300 ppi at the final printed size. * Your monitor displays between 72 and 96 ppi.
To change an images DPI in Photoshop, go to Image Image Size. Uncheck Resample Image, because this setting will upscale your image, which will make it lower quality. Now, next to Resolution, type in your preferred resolution, set as Pixels/Inch. Notice how the Width and Height figures change, too.
The industry standard for quality photographs and image is typically 300dpi. For businesses, producing an external document like a brochure, a booklet, or a flyer requires 300dpi. You might be able to get away with 250dpi if you are less concerned with the quality and resolution of the printing.
300 PPI is the ideal printing resolution for quality Designing a file in lower than 300 PPI will lead to blurriness and pixellation. On the other hand, there is no point in designing at higher than 300 PPI. As far as the eye can tell, there will be no difference in print quality.
What is PPI? PPI, or pixels per inch, is the amount of pixels that get printed (horizontally and vertically) in a 1 inch line. Therefore, a square inch of print at 300 PPI will consist of 90,000 pixels. The higher the PPI, the clearer your image will be because the pixels will be denser.
400 DPI is what id call a little higher than average when you dont know what your canvas is going to be used for. 600 and higher is high, but really unnecessary for most things. 300 is about average, print jobs are usually 70 to 150 depending on whether its poster sized, or more magazine print size.
A popular rule of thumb says the optimal image resolution for printing at the most common output sizes should be 300 ppi.
For most documents, 300 dpi is sufficient enough to be of good legibility and to provide adequate OCR results. In some cases 200 dpi may be adequate for simply retaining a print copy of a document. Scans at 400 and 600 dpi will results in slower scan speeds as the scanner detect fine details in your document.
1200 pixels / 3 inches = 400 dpi.
