The Cyrillization of Polish has been practised in many forms and began in the mid-19th century in the Russian Empire.

Cz, sz, rz/ż are retroflex. This means the tip of the tongue is a little bit further back than in English ch, sh, and French j, and the back of the tongue does not touch the hard palate. Ć, ś, ź are alveolo-palatal.
The diacritics used in the Polish alphabet are the kreska (graphically similar to the acute accent) in the letters ć, ń, , ś, ź; the kreska ukośna (stroke) in the letter ł; the kropka (overdot) in the letter ż; and the ogonek (little tail) in the letters ą, ę.
It indicates a former r sound. For example, the word rzeka (river) in Polish will be reka in Russian, rijeka in Croatian, etc. N.B.: There are a couple of exceptions, Tarzan, mierzić, marznąć in those cases you would pronounce rz as r and z separately.
Rz is pronounced as a zh sound, or as the sound in the English word pleasure - like sh, but voiced. E is pronounced as a short e, like in the English word hen. Sz is pronounced like an English sh.
