But walking streets you can find very local tradition, Christmas cribs which aredisplayed on streets of the Old Town in Krakow. But coming to the topic. Polish and Russian are often considered very similar. They are both Slavic languages and they both belong to the Indo-European languages family. Without a doubt, these languages have a lot in common and they may sound very similar to someone who doesnt speak either.
Among the major languages, it is most closely related to Slovak and Czech but differs in terms of pronunciation and general grammar.
Polish is the official language in Poland and is spoken in 8 other countries as monther tongue by a part of the population. The Polish language (native name: język polski, polszczyzna) has its roots in the Indo-European language family.
There are 32 letters in the Polish alphabet: 9 vowels and 23 consonants. ⟨q⟩, ⟨v⟩, and ⟨x⟩ are not used in any native Polish words and are mostly found in foreign words (such as place names) and commercial names.
The most similar to Slavic languages are the Baltic Languages: Latvian and Lithuanian, but only 3% of the vocabulary is similar. Polish has many words borrowed from German, French and English but there are numerous words that are false friends among Slavic languages.
W is always pronounced v like van, so forget the weird way English-speakers pronounce their w.
Overall, we found moderate levels of mutual intelligibility between the speakers of Polish on one hand and Czech and Slovak on the other.
From a grammatical and morphological perspective, Ukrainian is closer to Russian: they both have East Slavic roots. However, in terms of vocabulary Ukrainian is closer to Polish, from which it has borrowed a large number of words.
