As you may know, Slavic languages are a branch of the indo-european language family. Between the Year 500 CE and 1000 CE, Proto-Slavic gradually diverged into dialects and by 1000 CE there were already distinct West Slavic, East Slavic, and South Slavic languages. Dialects of these three languages developed into the languages of each Slavic branch.
