What are the types of photo paper? There are four common types of photo paper: glossy paper, matte paper, satin/semi-gloss paper, and luster/pearl paper. Glossy paper creates a vivid, shiny look, plus its cheap, which is why youll often find casual photo albums filled with glossy prints.
Coated paper (also known as enamel paper, gloss paper, and thin paper) is paper that has been coated by a mixture of materials or a polymer to impart certain qualities to the paper, including weight, surface gloss, smoothness, or reduced ink absorbency.
Two of the most common finishes for photo paper are glossy and matte, and each style is suitable for different situations. It is essential to know that glossy and matte inkjet papers are both coated for photo or art quality reproduction.
Glossy Photo Finish Photos printed with glossy finish have a natural shine to them. They are designed to reflect as much light as possible. The gloss is added as an extra layer, to specifically add shimmer to a photo.
Most portraits and wedding photos are typically printed on Lustre finish paper. It has a slight gloss with a subtle, often pearl-like texture.
Photographic paper is a paper coated with a light-sensitive chemical formula, like photographic film, used for making photographic prints.
The glossy finish enhances the color in the photo, creating a more vibrant image. The extra shine works well on print files with heavy color coverage, especially photographs and big graphics. This effect also makes the color on the photo prints look like they have higher contrast.
The most common types of paper for printing photos are glossy, luster, and baryta paper.
One of the greatest differentiators between matte photos and glossy photos is this extra layer of shine - so a glossy photo is actually a matte photo with an added layer of gloss! The addition of gloss seems to have a positive effect on the colors of an image. The colors of glossy photos seem more deep and vibrant.
Make sure that the glossy paper you have is designed for a laser printer. Not for an inkjet printer. If you print an glossy INKJET printer paper in a laser printer, it can cause the paper to burn as it wasnt designed to withstand the printers laser heat.
