The usage of personal names in Poland is generally governed by civil law, church law, personal taste and family custom. The law requires a given name to indicate the persons gender. Almost all Polish female names end in a vowel -a, and most male names end in a consonant or a vowel other than a.
The rule of thumb, however, is that -ski usually is associated with Poles; -sky may be associated with Czechs, Ukrainians, Russians, etc. There are jillions of exceptions, but if you want a basic rule to go by, thats it. Thats because Polish spelling rules say -k- can never be followed by -y, only by -i.
Top 15 most common surnames in Poland: Nowak : 203,506 (from nowy new) Kowalski : 139,719 (from kowal blacksmith) Wiśniewski : 109,855 (from wiśnie cherries) Wjcik : 99,509 (from wjt, a noun describing chief officer of a group of a villages) Kowalczyk : 97,796 (from kowal blacksmith)
Most Polish family names end in a suffix, such as WICZ, e.g. IWASZKIEWICZ. Many suffixes vary between the masculine or feminine. For example, -SKI, -CKI and -DZKI (male), become -SKA, -CKA, -DZKA (feminine). Therefore, the wife of Piotr MALINOWSKI might have the last name MALINOWSKA.
In explaining Polish last names, lets start with the most common ones most people recognize: names ending in ski. The suffix ski essentially means from. When combined with the prefix of a location, it creates a last name denoting where you are from.
A child in Poland is usually given one or two names; Polish registry offices do not register more than two. Among Catholics, who form the vast majority of the population, it is customary to adopt the name of a saint as an informal, third given name at confirmation, however, this does not have any legal effect.
Wives and children typically take on the husband/fathers family name or can use both family names (often hyphenated). However, a womans family name often has a feminine suffix/ending. Most Polish family names end in a suffix, such as WICZ, e.g. IWASZKIEWICZ. Many suffixes vary between the masculine or feminine.
Polish children are usually given two names, from these names at least one is usually from Christian tradition, because of the baptism and strong influence of religion in lives of Poles. Although in my family all of us (I have 2 brothers) were given just one name. Keep learning Polish with us!
If your last name ends in -ski, -cki or -dzki, then you must definitely be Polish. At least that would be the Polish line of reasoning. If you happen to be named Kowalski - congratulations, you get bonus points on the Polishness scale.
