Firstly, let me just tell you something about Polish language. Its a Slavic language, just like Russian, Ukrainian or Bulgarian. Its a part of the West Slavic branch, just like Czech or Slovak languages. Thats why they are so similar. Okay, lets start with the alphabet. Vowels first. Repeat after me. You see here that u might be written in two ways. Its just about the writing the pronunciation is the same. And when you see this sign, you will know that its just about the writing and we pronounce it the same because we have some other examples. You will see later. In Polish we also have to nasal vowels. Some of the most common suffixes include: -ski, -cki, -zki and the feminine versions -ski, -cka, -zka. -szyk, -czak. -ek, -ik, -yk. -arz, -erz, -acz.
Since the High Middle Ages, Polish-sounding surnames ending with the masculine -ski suffix, including -cki and -dzki, and the corresponding feminine suffix -ska/-cka/-dzka were associated with the nobility (Polish szlachta), which alone, in the early years, had such suffix distinctions. They are widely popular today.
Ola is a short version of Aleksandra, and Aga can refer both to Agnieszka and Agata. Some more surprising diminutives would include Lolek, a diminutive for Karol which is ironically just as long as the original name.
Both -ski and -cki form an adjective signifying from, like von in german, van in dutch, de in romance languages. Those names were originally reserved for the nobility.
Polish surnames can often be classified with the following categories: 1. Patronymic and Matronymic Surnames: Among the easiest to recognize, these names are created by combining a first name with a suffix.
If the name is based on a word whose root ends with a -k or -c, its adjectival form (be it a surname or a common word) gets a -cki, not a -ski. The c makes a tz / ts sound, not an s sound. There is no difference in meaning to the -ski prefix.
The rule of thumb, however, is that -ski usually is associated with Poles; -sky may be associated with Czechs, Ukrainians, Russians, etc. There are jillions of exceptions, but if you want a basic rule to go by, thats it. Thats because Polish spelling rules say -k- can never be followed by -y, only by -i.
The endings ski and ska have absolutely nothing to do with ones marital status, but with the gender of the person. So, a ski IN POLAND is always a male, and a ska a female. As Im sure youve noticed I emphasized the IN POLAND bit, because it is important.
