History. Large numbers of Polish immigrants settled the neighborhood after the mid 1800s. They were attracted to the many jobs in Pittsburghs burgeoning steel industry, which immigrants could perform even before learning much English.
This farming settlement was named Panna Maria, which means Virgin Mary in Polish, and was built on the plateau above the junction of the San Antonio River and Cibolo Creek. The Polish settlers built homes and a church on this land and quickly began planting crops and raising livestock.
The earliest Polish settlers, although only a handful, were prosperous businessmen, adventurers and political exiles. Outside of Jamestown, the earliest settlements were in New York, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania, and the immigrants found employment on individual farms, plantations and in businesses.
Poles were attracted to Pennsylvania by the availability of unskilled work in heavy industry. In some years, Poles and their native-born sons were the majority of those employed in the anthracite mines.
The first Polish colony in the United States was in Texas. Polish immigrants settled at a place they called Panna Maria in 1854. Panna Maria is on the San Antonio River, about 50 miles from San Anto- nio.
But it was a series of disasters in the 1850s in Poland that created the real impetus for docHub immigration to Texas. Severe weather, a poor economy, floods, lack of food, epidemics of typhoid and cholera; all these spurred interest in a better life elsewhere.
Immigrants believed that America offered jobs and hopes that problem-ridden Poland did not offer. With nation-wide economic troubles, famines, and religious persecution back at home, immigrants fled to America with hopes of finding prosperity and acceptance.
With the influx of immigrants after 1865, the Texas towns of Cestohowa, Kosciusko, Falls City, Polonia, New Waverly, Brenham, Marlin, Bremond, Anderson, Bryan, and Chappell Hill were either founded or populated by the Poles.
The first waves of Polish emigration were driven by the assimilation of Polish territories, religious persecution, difficult conditions in Polish villages due to overpopulation and lack of economic opportunities in the cities.
Most Polish immigrants flocked to industrial cities to work in factories, steel mills, slaughterhouses, and foundries. Chicago became the primary destination for most Polish immigrants, with an estimated population of 400,000 Polish immigrants by 1920.
