On January 26, 1934, Poland became the first European country which signed the Non-Aggression Pact with Nazi Germany for a period of 10 years. The secret part of this pact contained the agreement on mutual military assistance and the division of the spheres of influence.
In 1990, Germany reunified and it confirmed the Polish-German border on the Oder-Neisse line in a treaty. Both states are now NATO and European Union allies and partners, having an open border and being members of the European Single Market.
In World War Two, the Polish armed forces were the fourth largest Allied forces in Europe, after those of the Soviet Union, United States, and Britain. Poles made substantial contributions to the Allied effort throughout the war, fighting on land, sea, and in the air.
Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004.
Both countries pledged to resolve their problems by bilateral negotiations and to forgo armed conflict for a period of 10 years. The agreement effectively normalised relations between Poland and Germany, which had been strained by border disputes arising from the territorial settlement in the Treaty of Versailles.
Before taking this step, however, Hitler intended to subdue Poland and defeat France and Great Britain. The non-aggression pact allowed Germany to fight these intermediate wars without fear of a Soviet attack, thereby avoiding a two front war.
Headed by the officer Jzef Piłsudski (18671935) Polish legions were formed to fight on the side of the Central Powers against Russia. The idea was born of a Polish buffer state next to Russia.
The GermanyPoland border (German: Grenze zwischen Deutschland und Polen, Polish: Granica polsko-niemiecka), the state border between Poland and Germany, is currently the OderNeisse line. It has a total length of 467 km (290 mi) and has been in place since 1945.
