The Gunpowder Plot was stopped because of an anonymous letter sent to a member of parliament. In reality, we dont 100% know who sent the letters but historians pretty confidently place bets on Francis Tresham because the guy was Not Subtle At All.
The conspirators returned to London in October 1604, when Robert Keyes, a desperate man, ruined and indebted, was admitted to the group. His responsibility was to take charge of Catesbys house in Lambeth, where the gunpowder and other supplies were to be stored.

The plan was organised by Robert Catesby, a devout English Catholic who hoped to kill the Protestant King James and establish Catholic rule in England.
During a search of the House of Lords in the evening on 4 November 1605, Fawkes was discovered guarding 36 barrels of gunpowderenough to reduce the House of Lords to rubbleand arrested. Most of the conspirators fled from London as they learned that the plot had been discovered, trying to enlist support along the way.
Bates was the seventh man to be enlisted into what became known as the Gunpowder Plot, a scheme devised early in 1604 by Catesby to kill King James I by blowing up the House of Lords with gunpowder, and inciting a popular revolt during which a Catholic monarch would be restored to the English throne.
The Gunpowder Plot was a failed attempt to blow up Englands King James I and the Parliament on November 5, 1605. The plot was organized by Robert Catesby in an effort to end the persecution of Roman Catholics by the English government.
Fawkes and the conspirators who remained alive, were tried for high treason in Westminster Hall on 27 January 1606 and all were convicted and sentenced to death. The executions took place on 30 and 31 January (Fawkes was executed on 31) and included hanging, drawing and quartering.
This type of execution was only used for those found guilty of committing the most serious crime - treason. Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators* had plotted to kill the king and therefore received the most severe punishment possible.
