What Percentage is the RMD? The required withdrawal amount is a percentage of the account balance. This starts at about 3.5% at age 70 and increases with age: The SECURE Act increased the RMD age to 72 from age 70 .
How is my RMD calculated? The amount of your RMD is usually determined by the fair market value (FMV) of your IRA as of December 31 of the previous year, factored by your age and your life expectancy using the uniform life expectancy method. Sometimes FMV and RMD calculations need to be adjusted after December 31.
The new law raises the RMD starting age in two tranches: to 73, starting in 2023, and to 75, starting in 2033. In other words, individuals who turn 73 this year must take their first distribution no later than April 1, 2024. The distribution for subsequent years would need to be made by Dec. 31 of that year.
Under the law as it stands now, you generally must take required minimum distributions (RMDs) from your retirement plan beginning at age 72. SECURE 2.0 increases the required minimum distribution age to 73 beginning January 1, 2023. However, if you turned 72 during 2022, you must take your first RMD by April 1, 2023.
To calculate your required minimum distribution, simply divide the year-end value of your IRA or retirement account by the distribution period value that matches your age on Dec. 31st each year. Every age beginning at 72 has a corresponding distribution period, so you must calculate your RMD every year.
If you have multiple retirement plans such as a 401(k) and a traditional IRA you need to calculate RMDs for each plan separately.RMD Tables. IRS Uniform Lifetime TableAgeDistribution Period in Years7227.47326.57425.546 more rows 5 days ago
Therefore, your first RMD must be taken by April 1 of the year after which you turn 72 (73 in 2023).
