How long do you have to wait to get your G2? If you are a new driver trying to get your G2 license for the first time, you have to wait 8 to 12 months after you pass the G1 written exam. If you complete a certified driving school, you only have to wait for 8 months instead of the full year.
Graduated drivers licensing in Alberta, also known as the GDL program, is a process in which new Alberta drivers must adhere to a knowledge test focused on concepts of basic driver safety, followed by two separate road tests.
You have 5 years to get your G licence from the day you pass your G1 test. You can get your G in as little as two years. To complete the final phase of the graduate licencing system you must pass the G road test. If you are 21 or younger there are restrictions.
Each passenger must have a seat belt. GDL drivers are not eligible to upgrade to a Class 1, 2, 3, or 4 Commercial Licence. GDL drivers are not allowed to act as supervisory drivers to Class 7 Learners. A Class 5 GDL driver will be suspended at 8 demerits (as opposed to 15 for a non-GDL driver)

If a year sounds like too long of a wait to get your G2 license, you can get your G2 license in 8 months instead if you complete a Ministry of Transportation (MTO)-approved Beginner Driver Education Course.

After passing your G1 road test, you get a G2 licence. You practice with your G2 licence for 12 months. You can now drive: without another experienced driver in the car.
You can take the Class G road test after driving with your G2 for 12 months.
