Between 1940 and 1960, the amount of mail doubled in The United States. Thats largely because companies began using computers to send automated mailings. Soon, the flood of mail sent by banks, advertisers, and other businesses was overwhelming postal workers. The Postal Service needed a solution. In 1963, the Zone Improvement Plan divided the country into ten regions and assigned five digits increasing in specificity, from region, to large sorting centers, to smaller post offices. Where previously mail workers had to figure out which post office went with which address, now the zip code provided that information for them. The government promoted the new system with a cartoon character, Mr. ZIP, and a song from a zip-code lovin band called The Swingin Six. You know youve gotta have a zip code on the envelope, a zip code so you wont just have to hope. A zip code morning, noon and night, and everything will be alright. So what do the extra numbers mean? These last 4 digits represent specific delivery routes within delivery areas. This extra detail means an even more precise matching to a more granular level. It could represent a handful of houses on one side of a street, or even a single building that receives a high volume of mail.
Place the recipients name on the first line. On the second line, write the building number and street name. Include the city, state and ZIP code on the final line.
United States ZIP codes are five numerical digits long. ZIP+4 codes, also known as add-on or plus-four codes, include four additional digits that identify a geographic segment within a ZIP code delivery area. The first digit in a ZIP code represents a defined group of U.S. states.
The extra 4 digits on ZIP Codes identify segments of fluid postal delivery routes. Theyre not permanent lines, so a 9 digits ZIP Code can change regularly. Five-digit ZIP Codes also change, but they do so infrequently; its less likely that you will live in a ZIP Code when it changes.
Your ZIP+4 is a basic five-digit code with four digits added as an extra identifier. It helps to identify a geographic segment within the five-digit delivery area, such as a city block, a group of apartments, an individual high-volume receiver of mail, or a post office box.
Of course, there are larger post offices that are able to handle more than one ZIP code. However, each post office has at least one ZIP code assigned to it. So, USPS created 9-digit ZIP Codes to ensure fast and accurate mailings.
TLDR: A Zone Improvement Plan or ZIP Code uses 5 numbers to point to a specific post office or area for mail delivery. Essentially ZIP Codes refer to a particular area serviced by the USPS.
A ZIP Code is a 5-digit number that specifies an individual destination post office or mail delivery area. ZIP Codes determine the destination of letters for final sorting and delivery. Each ZIP Code designates a collection of delivery routes used by mail carriers and areas serviced by the USPS.
The basic 5-digit format was first introduced in 1963 and later extended to add an additional 4 digits after a dash to form a ZIP+4 code. The additional 4 digits help USPS more precisely group mail for delivery.
