A stuck parking brake can be the result of brake pads, calipers, drum, or lines not releasing when they should.
Most automatic gearboxes will let you select between P (for park), R (reverse), N (neutral) and D (drive). Park should only be used when youre stopped and getting out of the car. This locks the transmission, preventing it from rolling away (but you still need to apply the handbrake when parked as well).
One of the most common causes of a jammed parking brake is that of rust or corrosion. Water and dirt cause cables to erode which then can cause either your brakes to fail, your brake pads to stick to your wheels, or your cables to snap.
To release a stuck brake, you can do several things. If it is safe to do so, you can try rocking the vehicle back and forth or manually getting under the vehicle to pull the cables. You can also try setting and releasing the brake multiple times in the hopes of knocking the brakes free.
Engaging the emergency brake first is easier on the transmission. When youre ready to leave, start your engine, press your primary brake, release the emergency brake and shift into drive.
When you start a manual car, release the hand brake before you shift it to first. Hold down the brake pedal while doing this. And while you descend down from a decent speed, gradually apply the brakes and then full clutch. Try using the clutch as less as possible, it will help increase the life of the pressure plates.
A few things can cause a handbrake to get stuck: Cold Weather Low temperatures can cause handbrake mechanisms to freeze in place. Old Cars In time, rust or corrosion can interfere with your handbrake. This is why regular servicing is a must for all drivers.

And remember: its best to avoid driving with your parking brake engaged. If you cant get it unstuck, call for roadside assistance or a tow to avoid further damage to the brake system.
TOM: By applying the parking brake first, you allow the brakes to hold the wheels in place so the car doesnt roll and push the park mechanism to the point where its difficult to remove. RAY: When you drive away, do the opposite: Take the car out of park first, and then release the parking brake.
