This is CDX Technologies and were going to look at a function you can use in Microsoft Excel that finds the closest Zip Code to a target ZIP Code. You can also find the second and third closest ZIP Codes. So lets quickly go through an example in this worksheet. Heres a list of ZIP Codes in Excel and we want to find which is closest to our target ZIP Code 08001. So in this empty cell we just right-click and select the function CDXClosestZip. This function is part of our Microsoft Excel add-in CDXZipStream. We input the target ZIP Code, 08001, the range of cells we want to search in, in this case cells A1 through A100, and we also specify that were looking for the closest ZIP Code. Click OK, and the closest ZIP Code in the list is 08051. We can now repeat this process to find out the distance between these two zip codes. We put in the same data again, but here we select the distance in miles. and the distance between 08001 and 08051 is about 18 miles. For the second and third close

Removing extra dashes from Zip Codes Add a new column in the spreadsheet to the right of the Zip Code column. Click on the Zip Code column. Select Data --Text to Columns. Select Delimited Click Next. Check the Other checkbox; enter a dash in the box next to Other Click Next.
Shorten to Five Digits Insert a new column to the right of your current zip code column. Type or copy and paste =LEFT(C2,5) , replacing C2 with your cells identifier. Drag the formula down the rest of your column.
Standard US ZIP codes The standard ZIP code notation used by the United States Postal service uses five digits to identify a delivery area. An example of a standard US ZIP code is 90210.
These should be placed on the same line as the street address. Place the city, state, and ZIP Code in that order on the last line. This must be the last line. Never place an attention line, telephone number, or other entries after the ZIP Code line.
ZIP Codes are numbered with the first digit representing a certain group of U.S. states, the second and third digits together representing a region in that group (or perhaps a large city) and the fourth and fifth digits representing a group of delivery addresses within that region.
Heres how: In the Word document, click into the field with the zip code, and press SHIFT + F9. Word will display the field code. Click into the field and change it to the following: {MERGEFIELD \# 00000 ZipCode} Click back into the field and press SHIFT + F9 to hide the field code and display the text.
Also called plus-four codes, add-on codes, or add-ons, the ZIP+4 code starts with the standard five-digit ZIP Code. The four extra numbers are added after a hyphen to complete the ZIP+4. So what do the extra numbers mean? These last 4 digits represent specific delivery routes within delivery areas.
The correct format for a numeric ZIP+4 code is five digits, a hyphen, and four digits. The first five digits represent the 5-digit ZIP Code; the sixth and seventh digits (the first two after the hyphen) identify an area known as a sector; the eighth and ninth digits identify a smaller area known as a segment.
Add an Address Block Click or tap where you want to add the address block in your document. On the Mailings tab, choose Address Block.
So what do the extra numbers mean? These last 4 digits represent specific delivery routes within delivery areas. This extra detail means an even more precise matching to a more granular level. It could represent a handful of houses on one side of a street, or even a single building that receives a high volume of mail.
