The Pack-Line is an imaginary boundary that is one step inside of the three point arc (17 from the basket). The only player outside of that line is the player defending the ball. All other players are inside the arc.
The pack line man-to-man defense is a sagging man-to-man defense. The idea is to clog the inside, protect the paint, and prevent dribble-penetration. Instead of defenders (whose man is one pass away) playing on the line in denial, they sag back inside the imaginary pack line.
The pack line does not usually force to the baseline, but instead tries to deny it. The baseline attack is a potential weakness of this defense. A good time to attack might be after a skip pass. We have found our Runner zone offense to be somewhat effective, again if your baseline runner is a good shooter.
The Pack Line defense is a variation of man-to-man defense. The biggest difference between the two is that instead of the off-ball defenders being out pressuring their player and denying the pass, everyone except the player guarding the ball must be inside an imaginary line 16 feet from the rim.
Strategies to Score Against the Pack Line: Move the Defense. Most coaches understand that ball reversals typically correlate with quality shot attempts. Create Double Gaps. Attack in Straight Lines. Set Flare Screens. Use Skip Passes. Use Post Players as Passers. Be Shot-Ready.
The pack line defense, or packline defense, is a half-court defensive basketball strategy that aims to decrease dribble penetration into the key. A traditional man-to-man defense relies on a singular on-ball defender putting pressure on the ball handler, while auxiliary defenders cover passing lanes to the wings.

The pack line defense is a potentially effective strategy because it limits dribble penetration, hinders scoring opportunities, especially near the basket, and it influences the offensive team into settling for jumps shots from the mid-range or beyond the three-point line.
