In this lesson, were going to learn about creating numbered headings for technical documentation, or really any kind of documentation that youre creating. Any kind of document thats long and has a lot of sections and subsections. So well go over a couple of things. The first one is the use of styles and your style templates over here and then how to make those styles automatically number your sections so that they are easy for the reader to follow. So here for example, in this completed document, I have a Section 1 introduction and under that I have a summary and a methodology, and then the next section begins and I start another overview section. Over here in the navigation pane you can see that when I use headings and when I have them set up properly then when you are looking at the navigation pane you have this beautiful, very organized outline that is all set up for you and ready to go. To enable multilevel numbering, right click the Heading 1 button in the style panel and select Modify. Toward the bottom of the window, check Automatically update, then select Numbering from the format drop down. Click on the List Styles tab, select the 1/1.1/1.1.
If you need subsections numbered (for example, 2.1, 2.2, 2.12, etc.) as well, then choose the list the 1 Heading 1; 1.1 Heading 2, etc. option (right side, middle row). Note that doing this once sets the formatting for all heading levels.
You can number headings so that top-level headings (Heading 1) are numbered 1, 2, 3, for example, and second-level headings (Heading 2) are numbered 1.1, 1.2, 1.3. Open your document that uses built-in heading styles, and select the first Heading 1. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, choose Multilevel List.
Right-click the number you want to change. Click Set Numbering Value. In the Set value to: box, use the arrows to change the value to the number you want.Start with 1. Double-click the numbers in the list. The text will not appear selected. Right-click the number you want to start a new list. Click Restart at 1.
An outline numbered list is any type of list other than a simple bulleted or numbered list. That is, if the list has a mix of bullets and numbers, or if the list is a structured, hierarchical list (an outline), you need to use the outline numbered list features.
Outline Numbering Choose the Bullets and Numbering option from the Format menu. Click on the Outline Numbered tab. Click on the numbering style you want to use. If you are satisfied with the numbering style, proceed to Step 10. Click on the Customize button.
Answer: With numbered text, the last identifier also conveys how many blocks were in the list. With outline-numbered text, the items are in a well-ordered hierarchy.
