The 20202022 edition of the Associated Press Stylebook says to write all-caps ZIP for Zone Improvement Plan, but always lowercase the word code. But dont despair. We are filing your question with the many other suggestions from our readers for future editions of CMOS.
Zip-code Is a Verb Both, Dictionary.com and Merriam-Webster list zip-code as a verb, and they keep it all lowercase and use a hyphen. It means to mark something with a ZIP code, as in Be sure to zip-code that letter.
Thats right ZIP Code is an official trademark owned by the United States Postal Service. The ZIP in ZIP Code is an acronym that stands for Zone Improvement Plan, and that is why ZIP is capitalized.
ZIP Code is trademarked and essentially an invention by the USPS. They created it with a capitalized C. Why do you insist that this C is rendered in lowercase? A. You are right that the United States Postal Service writes ZIP Code with a capital Cand ZIP in all caps.
In 1983, an extended ZIP+4 code was introduced; it included the five digits of the ZIP Code, followed by a hyphen and four digits that designated a more specific location.
Also called plus-four codes, add-on codes, or add-ons, the ZIP+4 code starts with the standard five-digit ZIP Code. The four extra numbers are added after a hyphen to complete the ZIP+4. So what do the extra numbers mean? These last 4 digits represent specific delivery routes within delivery areas.
ZIP Codes are numbered with the first digit representing a certain group of U.S. states, the second and third digits together representing a region in that group (or perhaps a large city) and the fourth and fifth digits representing a group of delivery addresses within that region.
Include leading characters in postal codes For example, you can use zeros or dashes to display a postal code as follows: 0000000 98052 or ------- 98052.
