A: Step to Perform Bates Stamping PDF Documents: Launch Acrobat application and open PDF file. Go to Tools, Organize Pages, select the Bates Numbering option, and click on Add button. Click on Insert Bates number. Select the OK button for bates stamping the docHub PDF files.
Click Insert Bates Number. The system will default to inserting 6 Digits and start at number one. Click Ok. 7. Click Ok a second time and the document will now be numbered sequentially.
By default, Bates Numbers are located in the header or footer of the pages and can include a prefix and or a suffix or even to be combined with the existing header and footer text.
Bates numbers offer a way to specifically identify each individual page of a production. Bates numbering also known as Bates stamping or Bates labeling is the process of assigning a unique, sequential identification number to each page, file, or image in a voluminous production.

Bates numbering (also known as Bates stamping, Bates branding, Bates coding or Bates labeling) is a method of sequentially numbering pages with a reference number. A hand-operated Bates numbering device is used to stamp a number on a page, and the numbers will automatically advance after each stamping.
Then follow these steps to automatically add Bates Numbers to each page in the document set: Open the file. Click Tools. Select Edit PDF. Choose More. Click Bates Numbering and Add. Select Output Options to customize the serial numbers. Click OK.
Contents of native-format files cannot readily be Bates numbered. Similarly, files like Excel spreadsheets arent necessarily formatted for or conducive to pagination.
The original machine described by Bates allowed numbering with a four-digit sequence, ranging from 0000 to 9999. For example, page 852 in a document set would be 0852. Courts and law firms quickly adopted this system.
The short answer is no - legal professionals still use bates numbering - but documents and discoverable information have become overwhelmingly electronic. One thing to keep in mind is that native document productions usually can not include a physical bates stamp without first being imaged.
