The CSV filetype is a plain text file that holds lists of data and is useful for moving information between different software. Sometimes when opening a CSV file in Microsoft Excel the data appears jumbled such as in this example. This data is from an Atlas Copco MTF6000 controller and contains torque verification data. By examining the text I can see that the data is separated using semicolons, not commas. This would explain why Excel isnt properly displaying the data. To fix this issue we must open the Text Import Wizard. In older versions of Excel this is done by opening the CSV file using the File Import action, but in this newer version we must manually open the file by selecting File, then opening it from the disk or recent files list. Now that the Text Import Wizard is open we must tell Excel to use the Delimited data type which separates the text into fields using certain characters. Select Delimited and click next. If you have opened a csv file and found weird characters in it, chances are you are using Excel. All of WebCollects exports are in the UTF8 character set, which covers all international characters correctly. Some versions of Excel have trouble opening csv files that use UTF8 format.
Instead, this is due to the way Excel and other spreadsheet programs open a CSV file and display the data therein. Basically, spreadsheet programs are designed to be used for calculation purposes, so they tend to apply mathematical formats to numbers when the CSV file is opened directly into the program.
To open a comma-delimited (CSV) file properly, use Excels Data Import from Text feature to open the import wizard and set all columns as text. If you click the file and allow Excel to open it automatically, the columns might be formatted improperly.
Special characters of comma (,) quotation mark, and new line character may cause issues with a CSV import. If you get an import error, open the CSV file in Excel and use the Find Replace tool to change or remove these specific special characters.
For Windows users: Create a blank workbook in Excel. Select a column Go to Data tab and select From the text: Choose the option for Delimited and file origin: UTF-16LE. Go to the next page and choose Semicolon as the delimiter. Go to the next page and keep the column data format general. Done!
