However, if the test comes back as a negative dilute, this does not automatically mean that drugs were present in the urine sample. It simply means there was too much water to tell one way or the other. The laboratory might ask the client to submit another urine sample, and to not drink anything beforehand.
Diluted urine occurs when theres too much water in the urine. It means the urines concentration is weak. As a result, the tester will be unable to properly detect the presence of drugs in the urine.
49 CFR Part 40, or Part 40 as we call it, is a DOT-wide regulation that states how to conduct testing and how to return employees to safety-sensitive duties after they violate a DOT drug and alcohol regulation. Part 40 applies to all DOT-required testing, regardless of mode of transportation.
When a drug test comes back as a negative dilute, it basically means that there was too much water in the urine to get an accurate screening. The creatinine concentration in the urine sample is the primary measurement for identifying dilution, and if the sample contains no creatinine, it cant be counted as urine.
Dilute drug screens occur when an individual drinks too much fluid/ liquid of any kind in a short period of time, usually in an effort to flush their system of alcohol or drugs. We encourage everyone to drink at least 8-10, 8-ounce glasses of water each day to maintain a healthy body system.
Subpart IProblems in Drug Tests (a) As the employer, if the MRO informs you that a positive drug test was dilute, you simply treat the test as a verified positive test. You must not direct the employee to take another test based on the fact that the specimen was dilute.
If the second specimen test result is also returned as dilute, then that is considered a final result and no further tests are performed. The second negative dilute is accepted as a negative test result.
The Department of Transportations (DOT) rule, 49 CFR Part 40, describes required procedures for conducting workplace drug and alcohol testing for the Federally regulated transportation industry.
