The individual who uses a tight-fitting respirator is to perform a user seal check to ensure that an adequate seal is achieved each time the respirator is put on.
N95 - disposable Examine the face piece of the disposable respirator to determine if it has structural integrity. Discard if there are nicks, abrasions, cuts, or creases in seal area or if the filter material is physically damaged or soiled. Check the respirator straps to be sure they are not cut or otherwise damaged.
N95s must form a seal to the face to work properly. This is especially important for people at increased risk for severe disease. Wearing an N95 can make it harder to breathe.
Fit testing must be done prior to use, whenever a different respirator is worn, and at least annually thereafter (pending). Fit testing will be administered using an OSHA-accepted qualitative fit test or quantitative fit test protocol.
Properly don N95 respirator (See directions on page 2) Next, forcefully inhale and exhale several times The respirator should collapse slightly upon inhaling and expand upon exhaling The wearer should not feel any air leaking between their face and the respirator This is the sign of a good facial fit and a successful
Inhale deeply. The respirator should draw in and slightly collapse towards the face. Leakage will result in loss of negative pressure in the respirator due to air entering through gaps in the seal. If leakage, adjust the position and/ or straps and repeat seal check.
During a negative pressure user seal check, the respirator user inhales sharply while blocking the paths for air to enter the facepiece. A successful check is when the facepiece collapses slightly under the negative pressure that is created with this procedure. A user seal check is sometimes referred to as a fit check.
It is a commonly held notion that fogging of eyeglasses indicates poor seal of the N95 respirator and vice versa. Indeed, if fogging is present, the HCW frequently makes efforts to improve the respirator fit. The absence of fogging, on the other hand, may lure the user to a false sense of security of adequate seal.
