in this video guide to regular expressions I will discuss character ranges and negated character classes in the last section we saw how a character class is basically just a way to specify a list of characters that can appear at a specific position in your search string we also reviewed the first three characters that often require escaping inside a character class now is an appropriate time to review the fourth character that must be escaped in the character class the - or - character recall back to the example we reviewed when we wanted to search for references to figure names these figure names included a single letter of the alphabet to identify the figure we use this character class to specify that the last character could be any lowercase letter of the alphabet but this syntax looks ugly and takes up a lot of space to write out wouldnt it be better if there was a shorthand notation that allowed us to specify every lowercase letter of the alphabet without actually writing out eve

In regex, the uppercase metacharacter denotes the inverse of the lowercase counterpart, for example, \w for word character and \W for non-word character; \d for digit and \D or non-digit.
\b matches word boundary characters such as spaces and punctuation. to\b will match the to in to the moon and to!, but it will not match tomorrow. \b is handy for whole word type matching. and \s: \s matches whitespace characters such as spaces, tabs, and newlines.
Similarly, the negation variant of the character class is defined as [^ ] (with ^ within the square braces), it matches a single character which is not in the specified or set of possible characters. For example the regular expression [^abc] matches a single character except a or, b or, c.
To match any character except a list of excluded characters, put the excluded charaters between [^ and ] . The caret ^ must immediately follow the [ or else it stands for just itself.Rule 4. Exclusions. Regular ExpressionMatches[^.]any character not a perioda^za^z[a^z]a or ^ or z3 more rows
\d is not just a character in RegEx, it is one of the metacharacters for matching strings. By definition, metacharacters are characters that have special meaning while defining a pattern to match a string. So, \d is a metacharacter that matches any digit from 0 to 9.
The \b metacharacter matches at the beginning or end of a word.
\d and \D are different from each other. \d (character) is equivalent to [0-9] that means it matches any single number. The characters that are not matched by the \d are matched by the \D. \D is equivalent to [^0-9] that means it matches any character other than number.
\d. For Unicode (str) patterns: Matches any Unicode decimal digit (that is, any character in Unicode character category [Nd]). This includes [0-9] , and also many other digit characters. If the ASCII flag is used only [0-9] is matched.
Typing a caret after the opening square bracket negates the character class. The result is that the character class matches any character that is not in the character class. Unlike the dot, negated character classes also match (invisible) line break characters.
\D - It is used to match any non-digit character. Example. \w - It matches an alphanumeric character plus . Example. \W - It is used to match any non-word character.
