hi there its Dr Bernstein and in this video Im going to teach you how to modify quotes and how to use long quotes in your papers so um sometimes youre going to come across quotes that have that the quotes have really good information but theres some things in the quote that you might want to leave out that information might be distracting it might not be relevant to your key point so you can shorten the quote to make it fit the context of your sentence now obviously you cant manipulate your Source into saying something that he or she is not really trying to say and the quote will have to be able to make sense to the reader with those missing words but when you want to leave out words you can do so by using what are known as Ellipsis marks and Ellipsis marks are three periods thats what you see in the parentheses there there are three periods that are preceded and followed by a space you should use Ellipsis marks obviously as I said when leaving out information within a quote but

Substitutions, Additions, and Omissions in Quotations: Any such substitutions, additions or omissions should not result in quoting out of context where the meaning of the quote is changed. Brackets, also called square brackets, are used to show that the original quote has been modified.
If any incorrect spelling, punctuation, or grammar in the source might confuse readers, insert the word [sic], italicized and in brackets, immediately after the error in the quotation. Nowak (2019) wrote that people have an obligation to care for there [sic] pets (p. 52).
Change the words Use synonyms or a phrase that expresses the same meaning. Leave shared language unchanged. Its important to start by changing the structure, not the words, but you might find that as you change the words, you see ways to change the structure further.
Paraphrasing is NOT copying the sentence and replacing or changing a few words to be different from the original. (This is called patchwriting and may trigger plagiarism-detecting programs.) You should paraphrase when the idea or point is more important than the actual words used.
To include an in-text citation with a quotation youve altered, put the citation first, followed by a semicolon, and then the words emphasis added: Lincoln specifically advocated a government for the people (Brown 512; emphasis added).
Paraphrase short sections of work only i.e. a sentence or two or a short paragraph: as an alternative to a direct quotation. to rewrite someone elses ideas without changing the meaning. to express someone elses ideas in your own words.
Place brackets around any words you add to clarify. The brackets might replace unclear words (e.g. it, them, this, they) or add context to the quote. Brackets tell the reader that you have added your own words, but have not changed the meaning of the original quote.
