You cant just rename the external hard drive on a Mac if the drive is formatted with a file system that isnt supported by macOS. You can use Disk Utility or Get Info to inspect it. Generally, APFS, Mac OS Extended, FAT32, and exFAT are compatible with macOS.
Check Permissions: If youre having problems with a file or folders permissions, consider modifying them. To change the permissions, right-click the folder or file, choose Get Info, and then go to the Sharing Permissions section. Ensure you can edit the item with your user accounts permission.
Go to This PC Devices and drives right-click on the external hard drive you want to rename select Rename. Step 3. Type the label you want to add to this external hard drive and save the changes.
The world of permissions is a common culprit for Macs not letting you rename files or folders. The rights of every macOS file and folder specify who can see, edit, or execute that file or folder. Renaming a file or folder will be impossible if your user account does not have the necessary rights.
When you see a highlighted drive, press Enter/Return key on your keyboard. The default name of the drive transforms into a text box. Type within the text box whichever name you want to give to that flash drive of yours.
Often this is down to ownership and permissions. If the folder was put on the ext. drive by another PC then, even if the account name that put it there was the same, it is owned by the account on the other PC. You may need to take ownership and grant your account full control before you can rename it.
Select the files you want, right click and select Rename A dialog will open with options to select your renaming conventions.
Cmd + F2: This shortcut changes the name of the selected item.
