you can modify footnotes however to do that you would go to references footnotes group click on the dialogue box launcher and all of your options for editing them will be in here so for instance instead of the bottom of the page which is where they would default you can choose below text you can also change the layout of footnotes from 1 column 2 to column 2 3 column and so on you can change the format instead of it being one to three we can switch it to ABC Roman numerals so on you can choose a custom mark so we would just click the symbol button and choose a different mark for the footnotes we can also tell it which numbers to begin at whether it be one two and we can tell it how we want the numbering to go continuous restarted each section restarted each page and we can tell it to apply changes to the entire document or you can just change one footnote at a time

Place your cursor in the body text where you want the footnote superscript to appear. Select the References tab in the ribbon toolbar. Click Insert Footnote. This will immediately bring you to the bottom of the page with the right footnote number to use.
To adjust the settings of your footnote, including the numbering style, when to start and stop the numbering of your notes, etc., click on the Expand icon in the Footnotes Group of the References Ribbon. You can have your footnotes and endnotes restart their numbering in each chapter.
Change the number format of footnotes or endnotes Place the insertion point in the section in which you want to change the footnote or endnote format. On the References tab, click the Footnote Endnote Dialog Box Launcher. Click Footnotes or Endnotes. In the Number format box, click the option that you want.
In order to update the cross-references, place your cursor in a footnote and select the text of all footnotes by pressing Ctrl A. Once the footnote text is selected, press F9.
Under the Insert tab, click on Footnotes. After you click that button, two numbers should appear: one number should appear in the main text, and the corresponding number should appear at the bottom of the page. Write your citation or additional information next to the number that appears in the footer.
Click Insert Reference Footnote to open the Footnote and Endnote window. Select Footnote, and then choose your numbering option. You can have Word number your footnotes automatically, or you can choose a custom symbol to insert.
You have the option to restart footnote or endnote numbers so that numbering begins with 1 on each page or in each section. On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Format, in the Start at box, enter 1. On the Numbering pop-up menu, click the option that you want, and then click Apply.
