Yes, but note that all parties should sign their initials and date next to the change, so that if it is later disputed no-one can claim the contract was fraudulently modified after signing.
The initials, sometimes defined as an abbreviated signature, are a handwritten sign added to each page of a signed document, with the exception of the page containing the signature itself. Often located in the bottom right-hand corner, it is generally composed of the initials of the signatories.
Initialling a document means to add in the initials of one or all of the parties at the end of each page or on certain pages of the document. Initials on a document are representative of the signing parties consent to the content on the page they have initialled.
This is called a post-signature amendment and requires a written agreement between the two parties. In order to alter the original agreement, you will have to sign a new contract that defines the necessary changes. This second contract remains valid for as much time as the initial document.
Alterations on the Contract (or Strikethroughs) You simply cross out the language that no longer applies and re-write the language that should be applicable. Just be sure that each party initials or creates a written agreement that reflects that they approve the changes to avoid disputes down the road.
How to create a contract amendment Pinpoint what you want to change or add. Look at your contract and write down the parts you need to change. Date and title the new amendment. Next, add the current date and the title and date of the original agreement to the document. Draft and describe the changes. Finalize the changes.
Crossing out and initialling is more common in less formal contracts or smaller business settings. Its a way to propose changes to a pre-drafted contract without having to go through the hassle of redrafting the entire document. Larger companies and complex contracts typically avoid this method.
Although not a legal requirement, it is common practice for the parties to initial each page of the agreement. By doing so, this indicates each partys agreement to the provisions on each page and makes it harder (but not impossible) for the contract to be tampered with by replacing the pages.
