Here are a few common reasons why conditional formatting may not be working in Excel: The cells are not formatted as numbers. On the Format tab, click Conditional Formatting. In the Conditional Formatting Rules Manager dialog box, click New Rule. Enter the criteria for your rule. To format the field(s) based on the values they contain, select Field Value Is from the first list, and then select or enter the criteria you want.
Select the range of cells, the table, or the whole sheet that you want to apply conditional formatting to. On the Home tab, click Conditional Formatting. Click New Rule. Select a style, for example, 3-Color Scale, select the conditions that you want, and then click OK.
Highlight an entire row or column Select the entire data range (excluding column headings). Open the New Formatting Rule dialog box by clicking the Conditional Formatting dropdown button and selecting New Rule. Select Use a formula to determine which cells to format. Enter the formula that describes your conditions.
Formatting a Column of Data Right click on the name of the column in excel to highlight the entire column and bring up an options menu. 2. Select Format Cells from the options menu 3. Select the type of formatting needed from the category list.
In the Select a Rule Type box, select Use a formula to determine which cells to format. To apply color to alternate rows, in the Format values where this formula is true box, type the formula =MOD(ROW(),2)=0. To apply color to alternate columns, type this formula: =MOD(COLUMN(),2)=0.
