Unsettled proceeds from existing long positions can be used to purchase additional securities as long as the new purchase is not sold prior to the settlement date of the original sale that generated the proceeds used to finance the purchase.
Take note when buying a security using unsettled funds. Youll incur a violation if you sell that security before the funds used to buy it settle.
Therefore the abbreviations T+1, T+2, and T+3 refer to the settlement dates of security transactions that happen on a transaction date plus one Day, two days, and three days, respectively. As the term suggests, the transaction date represents the exact date on which the actual transaction was carried out.
When purchasing securities in a cash account, remember that stocks have a two-business-day settlement period from trade date to settlement date. During that time, proceeds from a sale are considered unsettled funds.
The settlement date is the date on which the investor becomes a shareholder of record. Weekends and public holidays are not included in the day count.
A T+2 settlement cycle means that the final settlement of transactions done on T, i.e., trade day by exchange of monies and securities between the buyers and sellers respectively takes place on second business day (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, bank and Exchange trading holidays) after the trade day.
Funds settled from your sale transactions. Unsettled funds may be used to open new positions but closing positions with unsettled funds may result in free riding. Unsettled funds refer to proceeds from the sale of fully paid for settled securities prior to settlement date.
If you sell a stock on Monday, it will settle on Wednesday (trade date = Monday). The cash will be available on Wednesday for withdrawal or transfer. If you sell it on Thursday, it will settle on Monday (weekends dont count). And if theres a market holiday in there, that will be skipped over as well.
This is considered a violation because brokerage industry rules require you to have sufficient settled cash in your account to cover purchases on settlement date.
It is the date when the buyer becomes a shareholder of the company. Similarly, if the buyer initiates a trade with the seller on Friday with a T+2 settlement date, the transaction will be settled on Tuesday. The settlement date excludes weekends, and only Monday and Tuesday will be considered as business days.
