Hey there Im Emma from mmmEnglish! Ive been talking about conditionals a lot lately and this video is no exception but this one is one of the most interesting of all because were going to be talking about mixed conditional sentences. Mixed conditionals are exactly what they sound like, a conditional sentence that mixes two different times in one sentence. That sounds a little tricky but Im here to go over it with you and to help you practise with me later on in this lesson so dont worry. If you had learned how to use mixed conditionals already, you wouldnt need to watch this lesson. Check it out. That is a mixed conditional sentence and by the end of this video, youll be feeling much more confident about using mixed conditionals as you speak in English. So lets go! If youve watched some of my previous lessons or perhaps youve studied conditionals at school, well youll know that the zero conditional is used to talk about facts and things that are generally true. Mixed conditionals are sentences that use two different times. Check out the examples: If I had slept earlier, I wouldnt have missed my appointment. Both the if clause and the main clause have the same time: past.
Form: If + simple present, will + base verb Example 1: If I see you later, I will say hello. Example 2: If I dont see you later, I wont be able to say hello. The second conditional uses the past tense in the if clause and a modal and base verb in the result clause.
Mixed conditionals are conditionals where the tense in the main clause is different from the tense in the conditional-clause (also called if-clause). This happens in second and third conditionals (unreal conditionals).
Mixed Conditional Patterns If I had won the lottery, I would be rich. But I didnt win the lottery in the past and I am not rich now. If I had taken French in high school, I would have more job opportunities. If she had been born in the United States, she wouldnt need a visa to work here.
Conditional clauses can refer to the present, past or the future. The zero conditional usually refers to the present. The first conditional can refer to the present or the future. Second and third conditional clauses are mainly used to talk about unreal or hypothetical past situations.
Four Types of Conditionals in English. The Zero Conditional (Present Real Conditional) The First Conditional (Present or Future Real Conditional) The Second Conditional (Present Unreal Conditional) The Third Conditional (Past Unreal Conditional)
There are four main kinds of conditionals: The Zero Conditional: (if + present simple, present simple) The First Conditional: (if + present simple, will + infinitive) The Second Conditional: (if + past simple, would + infinitive) The Third Conditional. (if + past perfect, would + have + past participle)
Mixed conditionals are sentences that use two different times. Check out the examples: If I had slept earlier, I wouldnt have missed my appointment. Both the if clause and the main clause have the same time: past.
We use this mixed Conditional to express a present condition, i.e. something that hasnt changed from the past, to describe why a certain past result didnt occur. If I had more money, I would have gone to France. If I slept longer, I would not have been too tired to go to class.
As we have mentioned earlier, mixed conditionals are created by combination of 2 and 3 conditionals. For example: If she had won the lottery, she d be a millionaire now. The if clause is a hypothetical past situation, and shed be a millionaire now is the present result of that imaginary past situation.
