Spatial Resolution refers to the size of the smallest feature that can be detected by a satellite sensor or displayed in a satellite image. It is usually presented as a single value representing the length of one side of a square.
A 1:1200 map is therefore larger scale than a 1:1,000,000 map. The 1:1,000,000 map would usually be called a small scale map.1. Types of Map Scales. Size of ScaleRepresentative Franction (RF)Medium Scale1:1,000,000 to 1:25,000Small Scale1:1,000,000 or smaller1 more row
Often called spatial resolution but also applies to spectral and temporal aspects of remote sensing imaging systems. Resolution is the accuracy at which a given map scale can depict the location and shape of map features; the larger the map scale, the higher the possible resolution.
The Resolution referred in GIS is also called Ground Resolution or Spatial Resolution. It refers to the actual ground size (meter) that a pixel represents. The map scale refers to the proportion between the map distance of measurement target and the ground distance.
[cartography] The detail with which a map depicts the location and shape of geographic features. The larger the map scale, the higher the possible resolution.
On a 1:250,000 scale paper map, the resolution is 125 metres. However, most GIS store locations in ground units (eg UTM coordinates, or Longitude/Latitude) with a resolution of a centimetre or less.
An example of a large scale would be 1:2,000 (1 inch on the photo or map equals 2,000 units on the ground).
On a 1:25 000 map, such as an OS Explorer, one unit of length on the map represents 25,000 units on the ground. So 1cm on the map represents 25,000cm or 250 metres on the ground.
An important number, which can cause initial confusion, is the scale. This gives the ratio of the map distance to the distance on the ground. This might sound complicated at first, but it simply means that with a scale of 1:50,000 one centimetre on the map represents 50,000 cm on the ground.
Resolution is the number of pixels rendered on your screen. Scaling is how much everything should be enlarged when measured in pixels. For example, with a halved resolution, things will still be the same size in pixels, but each pixel will be twice as large.
