The program is administered by the Department of Public Health (DPH). After COVID, an online course was created that takes about 18 to 20 hours to complete. This program allows individuals to administer medication without being a nurse in a group home setting.

A MAP consultant is a licensed professional who provides technical assistance and advice to MAP Certified staff. Only authorized prescribers (e.g., physician, dentist, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, etc.), registered nurses, or registered pharmacists can be MAP consultants.
MAP makes it possible for direct care staff, who know the specific needs and concerns of each individual, to administer medication as a normal part of the individuals daily routine. MAP is implemented through uniform, statewide standards that undergo continuous evaluation and improvement.
MAP Certification is effective on the date that the test results are posted on the DS Diversified Technologies website indicating that the staff person passed the Certification exam. MAP Certification is valid for two years from the last day of the month in which the test was passed.
Course fee is $250 per person.
A certified medication aide (CMA) administers drugs to patients in health facilities. They double as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) and assist with patient care. To become a MAP trainer, you must: Be currently licensed as a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, registered pharmacist, or physician in Massachusetts. Have at least 2 years of experience in your profession.
If the medication is different in color, shape, size or markings from the last time it was filled you must contact the MAP Consultant before administering it.
