you can modify footnotes however to do that you would go to references footnotes group click on the dialogue box launcher and all of your options for editing them will be in here so for instance instead of the bottom of the page which is where they would default you can choose below text you can also change the layout of footnotes from 1 column 2 to column 2 3 column and so on you can change the format instead of it being one to three we can switch it to ABC Roman numerals so on you can choose a custom mark so we would just click the symbol button and choose a different mark for the footnotes we can also tell it which numbers to begin at whether it be one two and we can tell it how we want the numbering to go continuous restarted each section restarted each page and we can tell it to apply changes to the entire document or you can just change one footnote at a time

If your footnotes are mostly quite short, and especially if they are few, you may never see the Footnote Continuation Separator. It is used when a footnote is too long to fit on the page and must be continued on the following page.
To change the formatting of the footnote numbers, select the Footnotes Reference Style. If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on).
Add footnotes and endnotes Click where you want to add the footnote. Click Insert Insert Footnote. Word inserts a reference mark in the text and adds the footnote mark at the bottom of the page. Type the footnote text.
In-Text Citations To cite your footnote within the body of your text, start by including a small superscript number after the word or sentence where you want to place the reference. The message Continues on next page is what you inserted as your Footnote Continuation Notice. This will be displayed at the end of the footnote if the footnote itself is too long to be displayed at the end of the same page and has to be continued on the next page.
