With the blank document open, go first to Layout. Then, on the Margins dropdown menu, select Normal for 1-inch margins on all sides, top, bottom, left, and right. Next, lets set alignment and line spacing by clicking on the Home tab. Then in the Paragraph grouping, select Align Left. Rule 10.9(a): Rule of Five for Cases. A short form for a case may only be used if the case is already cited (a) in the same footnote or (b) is cited in either full or short form in one of the preceding five footnotes.
Footnotes should only be used in non-academic legal documents when permitted or required by local court rules.).
Footnotes should be placed on the same page as their accompanying text. Footnote numbers are placed in superscript, usually at the end of the sentence. If you are referring to a word, place the footnote number directly after the word.
referring to the same source as in the immediately preceding reference. Ibid may be used after a supra, or even after another ibid. Supra: Latin word meaning above. Use supra when referring to a source for which you have already provided a full citation (but not the immediately preceding citation).
Print: Halsburys Laws of Canada, volume, subject matter section (update if applicable). Example: Halsburys Laws of Canada, Construction at para HCU-183 Changes.
As per the McGill Guide section 1.3. 1, footnotes in legal writing are to be used only: The first time a source is referenced, where a full citation in this first footnote referring to the source is required. At every subsequent quotation from the source.
Footnotes should appear at the bottom of the page on which they are referenced rather than at the end of the paper. Footnotes should be in 10 pt. Times or closest comparable font available, they should be single spaced, and there should be a footnote separator rule (line).
I advocate using footnotes much more commonly than is typical in legal writing. In my view, footnotes can enhance readability by keeping only important information in the main text and avoiding interruptions of an argument or narrative.
