Capitalize and spell out formal titles such as president, professor, dean, chairman, etc., when they precede a name (e.g.,Professor Smith). It is preferred that these titles appear in lowercase when the title follows a name or stands alone (e.g., Bob Smith is a professor at Saint Peters University.).
The rules are fairly standard for title case: Capitalize the first and the last word. Capitalize nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs (including phrasal verbs such as play with), adverbs, and subordinate conjunctions. Lowercase articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions, and prepositions (regardless of length).
To use a keyboard shortcut to change between lowercase, UPPERCASE, and Capitalize Each Word, select the text and press SHIFT + F3 until the case you want is applied.
Italicize the title normally indicated by italics when it appears within a title enclosed in quotation marks. When a title normally indicated by quotation marks appears within another title requiring quotation marks, enclose the inner title in single quotation marks.
Writing tips Keep it concise and informative. Whats appropriate for titles varies greatly across disciplines. Write for your audience. Entice the reader. Incorporate important keywords. Write in sentence case.
Titles of movies, television, and radio shows are italicized. A single episode is enclosed in quotation marks.
ing to most style guides, nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs are capitalized in titles of books, articles, and songs. Youd also capitalize the first word and (ing to most guides) the last word of a title, regardless of what part of speech they are.
Title case is a style that is traditionally used for the titles of books, movies, songs, plays, and other works. In title case, all major words are capitalized, while minor words are lowercased. A simple example would be Lord of the Flies.
