Require a password to open a document Choose File Set Password (from the File menu at the top of your screen), enter the requested information, then click Set Password.
Go to File Save As. Look for a checkbox labeled, Encrypt. Click the box to be prompted to enter a password to protect the file. At this point you can also type in a new name to create a copy and keep the original PDF unencrypted.
If you have the password and just want to save it as an unlocked . pdf, just open the password protected file (with the password) in Preview, choose Save, and change the name (dont select encrypt). The new . pdf file created should open without a password.

How to encrypt a PDF file for email Open the PDF you want to encrypt in the editor. On the top toolbar, click Tools Protect Encrypt Encrypt with Password. Check the box next to Require a password to open the document. Choose a password in the text block.
How to secure a PDF file using Word. Open the document you would like to password-protect. Click File. Select Info. Select Protect Document. From the dropdown menu, choose Encrypt with Password. Type a password, then click OK. Type the password again to confirm it, then click OK.
