In Ontario, rent increases are governed by strict guidelines set by the provinces LTB. For 2022, this amount was fixed at a maximum of 1.2%, and for 2023 the maximum was 2.5%. Typically, landlords who increase rent will use the maximum amount, so this also reflects the average rent increase from year-to-year.
Every year, the Province of Ontario sets the maximum amount that landlords can raise market rents for most Ontario renters without approval from the Landlord and Tenant Board. Ontario is a rent-controlled province for the most part, with a few exceptions. This means that a landlord can only increase your rent by a limited amount each year. Newer buildings are not rent controlled and landlords do not need to follow the same guidelines.
