When youve fired the last round in your pistols magazine, the magazines follower pushes up against the slide stop and causes it to catch in a recess in the pistols slide. This, in turn, causes the slide to be locked back.
When a pistol locks open, if you use the slide release all the time to release it, itll wear down the catch on the slide and eventually it will stop locking open.
