Can You Get a 500 Dollar Bill from the Bank? Since the bill stopped rolling off the BEPs presses in 1945 and got yanked from circulation 50 years ago, your banks ATM wont be spitting out any $500 bills these days, nor will your neighborhood teller give you this rare paper currency.
Once upon a time, though, $500, $1,000, $5,000, $10,000 and $100,000 bills were in circulation. After the last printing of those denominations in 1945, the Treasury Department and the Fed discontinued them in 1969.
In August 1966, the Treasury Department discontinued production of the $2 and $5 denominations of United States Notes.
Crane and Co., a Massachusetts-based company, has been providing the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing with paper for U.S. currency since 1879. Federal Reserve notes are a blend of 25 percent linen and 75 percent cotton.
Denominations. American paper currency come in seven denominations: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. The United States no longer issues bills in larger denominations, such as $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 bills. But they are still legal tender and may still be in circulation.
All U.S. currency is printed at our facility in Washington, D.C. and at our facility in Fort Worth, Texas. In addition to manufacturing U.S. paper currency, BEP also prints a variety of U.S. government security documents.
U.S currency is produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and U.S. coins are produced by the U.S. Mint. Both organizations are bureaus of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
The common misconception that the $2 note is no longer being produced also remains, though $2 notes have been printed since 1862, except for a 10-year hiatus between 1966 and 1976.
