now lets take a look at what happens at the visual cortex once it gets that visual information what happens there in a very short phrase we can describe what happens here in the visual cortex we do something called feature detection we dont see objects we are i should say we see them but we dont perceive them in any meaningful way we dont see the big picture we dont process the big picture here instead these neurons are looking and detecting only particular things and all the neurons that were going to be looking at respond to the same orientation so what i mean by orientation if this is the horizon this is a vertical orientation and i have some diagonals and then a pure you know horizontal and so on these are all different orientations you can think of it as a sort of the angle of a line the processing goes first to simple cells simple cells they just detect an orientation is it vertical is it horizontal is it diagonal thats it complex cells then if the object will say diagona

Ocular dominance columns are stripes of neurons in the visual cortex of certain mammals (including humans) that respond preferentially to input from one eye or the other. The columns span multiple cortical layers, and are laid out in a striped pattern across the surface of the striate cortex (V1).
A cortical column is a group of neurons forming a cylindrical structure through the cerebral cortex of the brain perpendicular to the cortical surface. The structure was first identified by Mountcastle in 1957. He later identified minicolumns as the basic units of the neocortex which were arranged into columns.
In primary visual cortex, two major types of columns have been described: the ocular dominance columns and the orientation columns (see Hubel and Wiesel, 1977).
In primary visual cortex, two major types of columns have been described: the ocular dominance columns and the orientation columns (see Hubel and Wiesel, 1977).
The columnar organization of cortex suggests that all neurons in the same column can be considered as a single population of neurons. Since these neurons share similar receptive fields we should be able to develop mathematical models that describe the net response of the column to a given stimulation.
Physiology. Orientation columns are located in the primary visual cortex also known as the striate cortex.
Each cortical column processes a subset of the sensory input space and is exposed to different parts of the world as the sensors move. The goal is to have the output layer of each column converge on an object representation that is consistent with the accumulated sensations over time and across all columns.
Cortical organization rests upon the fundamental principle that neurons sharing similar properties are co-located. In the visual cortex, neurons are organized into orientation columns.
